Renewable Energy opportunities are defying any economic slowdown and look set to grow significantly.

The Government has committed to sourcing 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.  By 2015 the renewable energy sector could be worth £150 billion in the UK alone, and employ around 1.3 million people.

Summit Skills (the Government skills council for the renewables industry) forecasts the UK needs 1 million training places to train people for the jobs created by renewables and microgeneration technologies.

Our new Renewable Heating Installer programme gives you the fundamentals of plumbing plus a choice of qualification in the major renewable, microgeneration technologies:

Chose from:

  1. Solar Thermal Hot Water Panels
  2. Heat Pumps, both Air Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat Pumps
  3. Underfloor heating installation

What the renewable energy training programme covers

Week 1 - Plumbing Skills Competency Certificate

  • Practical health and safety
  • Use of LPG in domestic plumbing
  • Plumbing hand tools, systems and fittings
  • Copper pipe work and above ground plastic pressure pipe work
  • Pipe bending and soldering

Week 2 -  BPEC Water Supply Regulations Qualification

To join an approved contractor type scheme, such as the Water Industry Approved Plumbers Scheme WIAPS and to be deemed competent you must demonstrate knowledge of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. The BPEC Water Regulations Qualification is accepted as the knowledge element required to become an “Approved Contractor”.

BPEC Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems Qualification
The qualification is aimed at engineers who want to install, service or commission unvented hot water systems in the UK. It is a legal requirement for undertaking such work. Building regulations require that all domestic water systems over 15 litres capacity must be maintained by a qualified person, holding a current recognised  Hot Water Storage Systems qualification.

Week 3 - BPEC “Part P” (Defined Scope) Electrical Competence Qualification

This qualification includes the theory and practical skills which are a legal requirement.

  • Replacement or installation of an immersion heater and controls
  • Replacement or installation of an electric
  • shower or shower pump
  • Replacement or installation of macerator units
  • Earth bonding requirements in bathrooms, shower rooms or kitchens
  • Central heating controls
  • Extension of ring circuits

Week4 - BPEC Certificate in Renewable Energy Awareness

An overview of green technology solutions which explains the benefits or each technology and covers costs, payback periods and grants.

It Includes:

  • Getting started, cost of fuel, climate change and energy efficiency
  • Solar thermal water heating
  • Domestic scale biomass systems
  • Heat pumps
  • Wind power
  • Photovoltaic systems
  • Micro-hydro systems

And you can choose all or some elements from:

1) BPEC Solar Thermal Installation Qualification

Solar Training - Aimed at engineers requiring the knowledge and skills of solar hot water system installation, leading to the BPEC Installers Certificate. You will be able to select, install and maintain domestic solar hot.

2) BPEC Air & Ground Source Heat PumpInstallation Qualification

Qualify as an installer with all the skills and knowledge required to correctly install ground and
air source heat pumps. Developed in conjunction with the Ground Source Heat Pump Association.

  • How pumps work – principles and components
  • Insulation, heat losses and the effect of heating system design
  • Horizontal ground heat exchangers
  • Health and Safety
  • Pump installation
  • Maintenance and fault finding

3) BPEC Warm Water Underfloor Heating Installation

The course covers the requirements of manufacturers that are members of the Underfloor Heating Manufacturers Association for the installation of Warm Water Underfloor Heating.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles of warm water underfloor heating (UFH) systems
  • Describe the floor systems and finishes associated with underfloor heating  systems
  • Install underfloor heating systems and components
  • Explain the operation of underfloor heating  systems and components
  • Describe the general installation and testing requirements of underfloor heating systems, and demonstrate an understanding of a range of manufacturer specific products

You will also receive help and assistance from NCS Career Search

The NCS career change programme comprise three key elements – (1) theory, (2) practical and (3) the services of NCS Career Search to unlock the value of what you have learnt, giving you the confidence to implement your training in an employed or self-employed role. Plus you will have access to exclusive discounts on relevant services and continuous professional development opportunities.
