Ivan
At age 30 Ivan have had enough of working long hours and enduring the stress of hitting targets, whilst making money for someone else.
“I finished university and went straight into the advertising industry. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and just fell into it. It was fun for a couple of years, but the last five years have been very stressful. I had enough and decided to get out.”
Ivan realised he needed to do something different, not just because of his health but for his family as well.
“It was a tough choice, I was about to get married, start a family and take on a mortgage, so there was enough going on my life let alone completely changing career. My wife was very supportive and she was the one that actually pushed me into it. I am so glad otherwise I don’t know if I would have ever got out that job.”
It is easy to stay stuck in a rut, but the longer you leave it the harder it gets.
Ivan studied part-time while he was working. “The course took longer than I wanted, because of everything I had going on in my life at the time. It was hard leaving the wife and my new child to go down to the practical sessions, but the satisfaction and sense of achievement I got when I finished was amazing.”
“Unfortunately during the course I failed a couple of the exams, but the tutors helped me through them on the second sit. It is not easy, but if you put the work in you will get a lot out of it.”
Currently Ivan is Part-P certified and has just finished working for a small family. He has his own business and is gradually building up a good customer base and is now looking to take on another electrician so he can build the business.
“A year ago I had no idea that I would be able to get to where I a now. I would say to anyone thinking about re-training, don’t think about it too long otherwise the opportunity will pass you by, just like it almost passed me by.”
