Gary Boyle (44) - Now A Property Marketer
My name is Gary Boyle, I live in Dorchester in Dorset, I’m 44 years of age and I am an Energy Assessor. I’ve been in Dorchester about a year now, having moved my family from South Africa
Oil and Gas to Renewables
While I was living in South Africa I was a contractor in the oil and gas industry, working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and during that time I acquired a young family and I started to look for something closer to home and I eventually came across an advert in a newspaper, advertising New Career Skills. Having contacted New Career Skills from the advert in the newspaper they sent a representative around, a lady who lives in Dorchester and she was great. I looked further into the course that they were offering for energy assessments, enrolled on it and became qualified.
I attended New Career Skills training centre in Eastleigh, so I could travel up and down just about every day, well, I did every day, less than an hour and the teaching there was great, there was a tutor there, I shouldn’t mention names but, absolutely fantastic, very, very patient, the maximum class size I can remember could have been 5, so you really did one on one training and one on one interaction with your tutor. The learning was structured that you could do some learning at home and you could do other learning at class. There was 2 weeks per course for training which had to be attended in that time you had to a certain amount of distance learning, which suited me because I had time at home and while I was away fulfilling my other contracts, I could take my work with me.
Its been a great move, I now have my own business, it’s been my own start up and its starting to kick off now as the market becomes more buoyant. As the market expands there’s more and more opportunities, it’s a renewable industry; when I say renewable, its green energy solutions. Now that green energy is a massive global industry, it’s a good time to get involved in green energy and an Energy Assessor plays a vital role in performing assessments geared towards helping people reduce carbon emissions in their buildings and in their properties, so it is al about renewable energy.
Changing a career at any stage in someone’s life is a big decision; we tend to get into a comfort zone. I wasn’t in that comfort zone, because I was looking around. If you are looking around and you’re looking for a career change, it is a good move and I would recommend it but you do need your family’s support, I have great family support, my wife has always been behind whatever I’ve done, whatever decision I’ve had to make she’s been there and I would recommend that you have that as well, I’m not saying that you don’t have it, but if you do go ahead and have a look, it is worth it.
Future plans, I have my own business now, I’m looking to grow it, I’d like to take people on at some stage and help employ and create jobs for people, the fact that it’s a renewable energy business, the renewable energy business is booming at the moment, it’s a really good situation to be in, it’s a healthy situation to be in and the sky is the limit, there’s so many opportunities out there and I would recommend to anybody looking for a career change that New Career Skills providing green energy solutions is a good place to start.
