Clare
Clare has worked in office work since she was 17 years old. Her most recent full-time employment saw her as a credit controller. Whilst pregnant with her second child, Clare and her partner decided that they wanted to move to Worthing to be nearer her family and the sea. The idea of returning to a desk job did not appeal to Clare, who wanted a complete change and also one that would allow her to be more flexible with her working hours as she had two young children to look after,
Clare saw an advertisement in the local paper about becoming a plumber on a blended learning scheme through a company called New Career Skills, After sending off for an information pack, Clare took up the offer of an Career Advisor from NCS to visit her home and talk her through the process. The Career Advisor informed Clare of her options and how she could fund her career change.
As taking the course meant time away from home she consulted her partner and her family and they both agreed to give her the time and support to study from home in between looking after the children (who are aged 2 and a half and 13 months old).
“The beauty of this course is that I have flexibility that enables me to study around my life, so if things are hectic at home then I can lay off the studies for a while and I can chose when I want to do my practical studies."
“I now feel that working as a plumber will be a stable job for my family and should enable me to learn the skills to be able to work freelance. This course will have enabled me to learn the tools and skills of a plumber, giving me an incite into the plumbing profession and will hopefully get me employment with a firm or person who is willing to support me whilst I get fully qualify!”
