Brian

After 15 years of working on the water, 42 year old fisherman, Brian, decided it was time to hang up his nets and head back to dry land.

Brian, who lives in Hampshire, had been considering a career change for some time, and was interested in taking a course in plumbing. However, being used to working with his hands, with no need for studying, Brian was apprehensive about the written work involved. He saw an advert in his local paper for New Career Skills, and when he spoke to a Career Advisor they assured him that he could complete the course at his own pace.

It wasn’t long before he had started his course and was thoroughly enjoying it. Brian was overwhelmed and encouraged by the support he received:

“It was so easy to understand, the tutors were great, always had time for you, and allowed you to work at your own pace. I was able to study and work as a fisherman at the same time.”

Aside from the practical and theory elements of the course, plumbing would require him to also develop sound business acumen, as his new role would require skills and knowledge in areas such as interaction with customers and advertising a business. He found this much easier than he had anticipated thanks to New Career Skills sister company, New Career Search, who offered him all the individual support and help he needed.

Sue Edmundson, Career Search Advisor commented,

“We treat each client as a person and take into account all of their circumstances. We give individuals time on a one on one basis as and when required. Also, at the end of the course we don’t just leave them - we continue our support for 12 months after completing their course.”

Brian also received a CD from New Career Search, which contains the equivalent of 400 pages in print, of information about how to start his own business. Brian explains how this CD helped him:

“I have now completed the course and have started my own business. I took note of all the tips the CD gave me and have advertised in the local paper, which has given me a great response of work. Also, advertising on my vehicle, which is great advertising in its own right.”

The tips Brian followed have led to brilliant results. He says,

“I just cannot believe the response, one of my clients employed me for one job but has been so pleased with my work that they have asked me to come back three times. I really feel I am now back on solid ground.”
