The Home Energy Advisor Role

Key to the Green Deal is the new role of the Home Energy Advisor.

At least 25,000 Advisors will be needed for the Green Deal over the next few years.

The Home Energy Advisor’s role will be to visit and assess the energy efficiency of homes and recommend what actions they need to take to benefit from the Green Deal. They will measure things like heat loss, energy efficiency, suitability for Green Deal products and microgeneration technologies.

Advising on the Green Deal

The Home Energy Advisor might recommend better loft insulation and wall insulation and then calculate the home's cost savings if these are installed. The Home Energy Advisor will explain how the financial support for homeowners under the Green Deal will work. The Advisor will then link homeowners with suppliers to promote Green Deal products and services.

More details can be found on the Government’s Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) website here.

Building on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

The Energy Performance Certificate, or EPC, will probably be the basis for a Green Deal assessment.

An important aspect of the Green Deal will be the provision of personalised advice to householders. It is likely, but yet to be confirmed, that the role of these advisors will be to:

  • Produce a fabric assessment, along the lines of an improved EPC, where one does not already exist.
  • Provide personalised face to face advice to householders on the most appropriate energy efficiency measures for their home using the EPC as the basis for that advice;
  • Provide advice on behavioural changes that an occupier can make to reduce energy consumption;
  • Lodge an updated EPC on the Register following installation of the Green Deal measures to track the energy efficiency improvements
