Getting Your First Job, Or Starting Your Own Business With NCS Career Search

NCS Career Search (part of New Career Skills) is a team of specialist advisors who help you get a job in your chosen industry or start your own business.

NCS Career Search

NCS Career Search has a dedicated team in centre, a web site www.ncscareersearch.co.uk, and also an exclusive community, MyNCS, to help you start out in your new career.

Career Search also arranges work experience for students with our graduates who have completed their training a few years ago and are now running their own businesses. This is a great way for you to gain real life experience of what you have learnt in centre.

What you get from NCS Career Search

From your first week in centre you will have access to a Career Search advisor and you will be offered advice on preparing your CV, interview technique and creating a business plan (including sales, marketing, finance, staffing issues and legislation).

Towards the end of your course you will receive business manuals on working in your new trade or setting up your own business. These manuals contain plans and techniques for starting and growing your business and some invaluable tricks of the trade.

There are also free templates and documents on sales, marketing, finance and customer care you can download from the web site.

The NCS Career Search web site also gives you access to a range of products and services at exclusive discounts which will be helpful to you in your new career – services like web design, financial and legal advice, low cost van hire, insurance discounts, and
money off tools and workwear.

MY NCS – a community of students and graduates

Throughout your course and beyond you will be able to access the NCS community, calledMyNCS. Through this community you can keep in touch with the other students you meet while training, and stay in contact even after you graduate, so you can share jobs with them. New Career Skills trains people as electricians, plumbers and in renewable technologies (like solar and heat pumps), so there are plenty of jobs which can be shared amongst the community.

A end-to-end career change programme

This is all part of the NCS Career Change Programme: we give you the first the knowledge, then the skills and also the help starting up, putting everything to work for you in your new career path.

MyNCS Access Testimonies

Hi Clare,

Just writing to say thank you to you and all the NCS Career Search team for setting me up with Gary Shaw one of your former NCS students. I have had a really brilliant couple of days and found the work experience totally essential to setting up on your own. He showed me his complete tool kit and got me using power tools I've never even seen before!!! Further to that he let me decide how to get jobs done so I could realise by my error how to be more efficient!

He took me to Wickes and showed me what can be bought from chains and what you can better deals on and also gave me loads of cost cutting hints and tips. Over all I would recommend doing a couple of days shadow work through your ACCESS work experience programme to all NCS students, no matter how inconvenient in location to where they live. It's invaluable!

Gary said if I had lived any closer he would have offered me a job! off the back of this 2 day work placement you arranged Clare!

Thanks again

Katherine Barlow DEI Graduate, Watford

I used to work as a HGV driver until ill health made me rethink my career, due a heart problem my HGV license was suspended for eight months, during this period I had to be released from my position as a HGV driver as I couldn't drive at this time.  I have several years experience of electrical work and decided to gain my qualifications through New Career Skills.

I am currently studying week three, I have already been given some great opportunities to gain further work experience which includes carrying out some work within the centre and also working with a graduate.  I have found the work placement experience an excellent addition to my study and training.  I would definitely advise people to train with New Careers Skills, I have found they are the only training organisation that can offer the unique service of New Career Search.

Hi Clare,

I've always known that completing the NCS course was only part of what I needed to do in order to successfully change my career and become an electrical installer.

I was determined to get some experience with a qualified installer locally. However, I currently work full-time, 5 days a week so I was not able to simply drop everything as and when things came along. To do the course I used up my holiday allowance so this left only weekends. My other challenge was I currently don't have a car as I use public transport to get to work in Sheffield.

It has been great to have the support of Clare from NCS Career Search who put me in touch with Jon Jordan (an former student of NCS who qualified as a electrical installer in 2010) Jon lived local to me in Barnsley and was able to support me. I contacted Jon to have an initial chat. We agreed I could help on a weekend job and Jon picked me up from the train station. The job was a great eye opener and it was valuable to be able to work alongside Jon who was a great mentor and very supportive, especially as we both trained with New Career Skills. It was a great opportunity to be able to talk to Jon, build my contacts, gain experience and then agree to help me with any jobs I secure through my own network of work colleagues, friends and family. Jon has also agreed to support me in preparing for my Part P so I can gain accreditation with one of the competent person schemes.

The ACCESS programme is very good. It has given me a great boost to my confidence and I'm more determined than ever to get on and set up my own business.
