Tania Isaacs - Now A Property Marketer

For some full time mums finding a way back into the working world can be difficult. Discovering a way to keep the kids and the bank manager happy as well as achieving a sense of job satisfaction, can sometimes seem like an impossible task. Tania found the perfect solution when she set up her own business as a DEA.

Up The Career Ladder

Tania Became A DEABeing in control of her own work schedule has enabled her to strike that perfect balance between work and family commitments. Recently Tania has extended her services to providing floor plans in addition to energy assessments, she currently runs her business part time and earns just over £20,000 a year.

After having two children Tania decided to give up work and stay at home to be a full time mum. Eight years later her children were in school and Tania felt she needed a new challenge.

“Both children were at school and I hated sitting at home doing nothing”.

When considering career options Tania’s main requirements were that the job would allow her to continue dedicating time to taking care of her children, be non-office based and centred on the property industry.

“I didn’t want to be stuck in an office, having had 8 years out of an office I didn’t want to go back into one”.

Having a passion for architecture Tania considered training to be an architect, but realised studying for such a qualification would be a very big commitment; making it difficult to accomplish alongside her family responsibilities. Then a friend told her about the Domestic Energy Assessor training programme provided by New Career Skills. As a result of further enquiries Tania realised this was a great opportunity for her to develop a career which would meet all her requirements.

“It was an opportunity of having my own schedule, of meeting lots of people and getting to see all the different properties”.

The training programme is a mixture of home study and practical training, structured specifically to enable people to maintain their other commitments. As a result Tania was easily able to study for her qualification whilst still having the time to take care of her children. Like most people Tania experienced a few initial doubts about retraining. Being away from a work environment for so many years had created an uncertainty in her own capabilities.

“When you’ve been out of work just looking after children you forget your abilities and you forget that you can talk to people you forget that you’re capable of doing a job”.

However such doubts quickly evaporated once Tania began the practical training. The support provided by New Career Skills staff undoubtedly had a positive impact and contributed to Tania regaining her confidence.

“The chap that did my assessment was absolutely brilliant; I had very constructive feedback from him”

She added:

“To be honest the scariest thing for me was going up a ladder for the first time, but once you’ve been up there two or three times its fine”

Once qualified Tania immediately took steps to set up her own business. The first step was to seek the advice of New Career Search, a dedicated after-care service provided by New Career Skills. The service provides masses of useful information and guidance in relation to setting up in business or obtaining employment, all the advice is tailored specifically to the individuals needs. Equipped with the knowledge provided to her by New Career Search Tania was able to begin effectively marketing her services and work quickly began to come her way. For Tania this was a pleasant way to return to the work force as she was able to determine her own work load.

The main consideration for Tania was to find a career which would not affect the routine she has with her children. Tania has been running her business for some time now and easily manages to structure her work around her children’s needs.

“ The appointments tend to be during school hours I can usually do the paper work when they get home from school, so I can do that and still interact with the children”

Tania is even able to include her children in her work, they show a real interest in what she does, and they like to learn about energy saving tips and products.

“I remember my little girl went to school not long after I qualified and told her teacher they had to change the light bulbs because they weren’t energy saving bulbs”.

It is clear Tania has successfully found a way to keep the kids and the bank manager happy; she is earning a good wage whilst still having time to stick to the daily routine with her children, but just as importantly she has been able to achieve that much desired job satisfaction.

“I’m really enjoying it, I like being with other people so this is a great way of getting to meet some quite amazing people and talking to them. Its not for the faint hearted you do have to work but its great being your own boss”.
